First of all, thanks in advance for any advice.

I am working on a 1998 Optimax, 135 HP. It is on a 1998 Astro.

I started out tonight with one problem, and maybe came across another. I actually started poking around because my trim gauge quite working. I decided to start with the obvious and see if it was getting power and then noticed some issues right at the key switch.

I noticed the screws connecting the wires on the back of te switch were loose and then noticed one dual black wire was just hanging there. I am trying to attach a pic, but I took it using a flashlight as a light source, so its not too great.

Basically there was a dual black wire hanging down and an empty spot on the back of the switch. Intuition tells me it should go there, but I hate to just assume things.

On the switch, the open spot is between the purple wire and the red wire. There is also an "M" on the switch right where the missing screw is.

I can't quite tell where the two black wires run. According to a manual I have, this should run to the safety, kill switch. But, that manual also says these wires should be black/yellow and mine are just black. Recently, like a month ago, I know the kill switch was working, but also have no idea of these wires came loose any time soon, or if they have been that way.

So, any help is appreciate. I am also attaching another pic I took (also poor quality) while I was down there. i am just curious what this is.

I still ultimatly need to figure out why my gauge isn't working, but I want to make sure I take care of simple stuff first.

Again, thanks in advance.

It appears the black wire connects to the screw terminal right below your finger (the one with the screw missing). Check the letters on the switch next to each terminal. If there is an "M" (as in magneto) then that wire is for the kill switch.

That was my guess but I would rather be cautious than sorry. This is the nicest boat I have ever had, so I like to be careful.

Anyways, thanks much for the advice. I screwed it all back together. Now, on to my original issue with the trim gauge. I have another post and will see if I can figure that one out.

Much appreciation.
