I went to a local KFC today and when I tried to pay was told they would not take my 20 dollar bill because it was fake. I asked if they had checked it correctly and was told told "yes the money is fake and we will not take it" I was sorta upset so I then took it to my bank and had the money examined. The head cashier said the money was real, no problem. I then went home and called the KFC ready to chew their arse big time. The manager said that because so much fake money was being seen at the store they had a new machine that checked it and if the machine said it was a fake they wouldnt accept it. Im glad I didnt start cussin but I did tell her that pehaps they needed to get their dam machine fixed.. The wife laughed and said that I should be glad they didnt call the cops on me for trying to pass counterfit money..I told her that indeed I would have been arrested but it wouldnt have been because of the money. She knows I would have "made a disturbance".....And to top it off the frikkin chicken pot pie wasnt really that good.

I bet if that same $20 bill was paying for a bucket of extra crispy, there wouldn't have been a problem :D

I think I might set up a hidden camera and take the 20 spot back to the same store and see what happens. It will make a good utube clip. I dont like being accused of trying to commit a felony, thats a big deal to me and I dont like them getting away with it.At least a letter to the corporate offices might make a few heads roll. Afterall it is a big deal.

Actually you were lucky they gave it back to you. They would have been within the law to seize it and call the PD. You would have been out $20 if it was fake. I had that happen back in the 70's when $20.00 was worth a hell of a lot more than it is now. It was a major hole in my pocket book to lose that $20. What's worse is I got it from a bank, who, of course, refused to believe they had passed me a counterfeit $20.00.

Let's go in there with a Chicken Checker and check out those nuggets.
I think they will not have much to say when it shows up all the mashed up toe nails and bum lips.

I have a tendency to believe it is the machine quality and the machine operator that are at fault. :p

Re: KFC said my $ 20 was a fake

I had an incident with a cashier a few months ago. The store was using an Infrared cash checker. The $20 I gave her was an older note, older than what the machine was capable of testing. She called a manager, who sided with me, after the bill passed an ink test, yet the 20 something clerk insisted it was fake, because the machine says so. She even got nasty with the manager. I didn't stick around to see what happened next. I took my items and receipt and left. If she had persisted, I'd have called the police myself to prove a point.
With all the counterfeit bills out there today I carry my own test pen with a black light. The most common I've seen lately has been $5 bills. I've seen a half dozen fakes in circulation over the past few months. It gets worse around the holidays and for a while there after.

Was the bill in question an older note? The note I had was from the 80's, I think it said 1987. If she passed it over an infrared tester it would most likely be rejected. Newer bills have a strip which will glow under IR and UV light.
The most common counterfeit bills are 'bleached' bills, where in the counterfeiter takes a lower denomination bill, with all the right security strips, then reprints it as a higher denomination. For example, a bleached or erased $5 bill now becomes a $20 bill. Only a light scan to show the hidden IR strip which will still read "Five" on it will detect this sort of counterfeit.
If the bank teller didn't do a proper check, such a fake is hard to notice with the naked eye, and often passes through some lesser counterfeit detectors.
However, the $5 fakes I've seen lately are blatant fakes, printed without any security measures or watermarks. Bills like this often get passed at fleamarkets, yard sales, and gas stations where either the recipient isn't aware of how to tell a fake, or too busy to check every bill.

This brings up the danger of using plastic at fast food places. My neighbor used plastic at a local wendys and 2 weeks later learned that someone had paid their power bill and cell phone bill WITH HER CARD NUMBER... Even when they learned the number was stolen at wendys the cops wouldnt do a thing. Even having the name and account numbers they said "what do you want us to do, we didnt see anyone steal your account number" for this reason I prefer to use cash for small stuff.

I had the same thing happen to me. I told them I had just gotten it as change from Walmart but they still refused to take it...I told them that was all the cash I had and threw the $20 on the counter and told them to keep the change for a tip and walked out the door. I was expecting to get pulled over on the way home but never did.

Re: KFC said my $ 20 was a fake

Counterfitting is a lot more common than you might think. A friend is a bank branch manager. He told me that they see a lot. How much, he wouldn't/couldn't say but "significant" was what he would say. He also wouldn't/couldn't say what they did with the fakes.

They look at every bill $20.00 and higher. Any smaller bill inspections would overwhelm them. They use the old "eyeball" check which simply entails holding it up to a light to look for certain marks. They also use special markers that react with the paper. From what I am told, the markers are quite expensive but a sure fire way to tell. I was told there is some sort of chemical reaction to a component in the paper of U.S. currency which is quite unique.

I wouldent be to worried about going to jail for only having one fake bill.
You will however loose the money and a bit of time talking to the cops.

Reporting it will get that kind of fake in to the secret sevice Database.

Re: KFC said my $ 20 was a fake

7 or 8 years ago I got my paycheck on Friday afternoon and stopped by the grocery store after work. Cashed my paycheck at the customer service counter, then grabbed a few items for dinner that night.

Clerk did the pen test and told me it was fake. This particular store always has an off-duty but uniformed police officer hanging around the checkout counters for security, and she called him over.

It took awhile and a bit of talking, but by the time I was done it was the store that was nearly in hot water for passing the counterfeit money to me. (I had no cash whatsoever on me except for what I got from their counter when I cashed my paycheck.)

I giggled about that for days... :D
