As you can tell by my login name, I am fairly new to boat ownership, at least one with a motor big enough to go 25mph or so. The question I have is that I want to mount a kicker motor that I have purchased (3.5 HP Tohatsu) on the back of my Blue Water boat. What I keep running into is a debate on the bracket. The motor weighs 38 lbs, and is a 4 stroke. I went to Cabelas to get a bracket and they told me the 2 stroke (WAAAAY cheaper price wise) would not work for a 4 stroke motor. I mentioned that the bracket is rated for a 115 lb motor/20hp. They said they would still not use it, but had no alternative since their 4 stroke bracket was for a maximum 50 hp (overkill for a 3.5 for sure).
So my question is this; what is the problem/issue with mounting a small 4 stroke on the 2 stroke bracket? Will it work? Is it safe for my boat transom?
