I have a 1986 Robalo 1800 and would like to add a kicker engine for emergency use only. Is it possibel mount a kicker engine on this boat?

The ladder will be coming off in the near future so i will have both sides available to mount the kicker.

If it is possible what is the recommended method? What kicker plate do you recommend?

Thank You for your time.

Ray..

No reason you can't do it. Look at the Garelick site- they have a selection of different mounts and installation instructions online. You can see what it'll take to mount it up.

If you really want it to get you home in an emergency, make sure you don't go too small. I ran a 15hp kicker on my 21-footer when I owned it and it was capable of moving the boat along in some fairly strong headwinds. I think a 9.9-15 will work fine for you. Bigger is better in this case in terms of safety factor.

There is plenty of room for a kicker and you can go with either a fixed bracket or an ajustable mount.

I have a 18 foot sea pro cc with an adjustable mounting bracket that I use. I have it mounted on the starboard side to help out with torque prop from the main motor and because it puts the tiller handle towards the center of the boat. I have an 18 hp motor and it will push the boat 6-7 mph into a light current and wind. Its not flying, but it will get you home and I have needed it for that the last few trips out. Also the spring assist make it fairly easy to raise the motor to get it out of the water when cruising.

You've got lots of room. You'll definitely want to mount it on the swim platform side though. Trust me on that one.
