Boat is a 1989 starcraft sfm 180 .18 ft aluminum. I have an adjustable bracket mounted rated up to 20 h.p . The transom at that spot measures 20 1/2 " .long shaft? Short shaft? I fish lake st clair use primary for emergency motor and maybe troll but splashwell is so deep its a 4 ft reach.probably troll with a bow mount instead . But need a backup motor prefer with a gas tank and manuel start want to avoid extra gas tank and battery wires too far of reach and I got enough gear and people on the boat .I was looking at a 1989 mercury 6 ml matches big motor ( 80 hp) its a two stroke. I would like to go long shaft but will it clear in tilt up position ? Any help would be great.

Pics would help. I had a 25hp elec start long shaft on my 21' Islander with steering through main motor, 150hp. Easy set up and it tilted almost all the way out of the water. If you have a bracket you should be ok. Bow mount on a high bow starcraft will be a pain on St. Clair.

Re: KICKER MOTOR (what size and length ) HELP!

A 6 hp would be fine for trolling but might not be my first choice as backup motor in any wind/current. I have an 18' aluminum boat and run a 9.9 bigfoot long shaft kicker. Again, fine for trolling but I really don't want to run in 15 miles with it. As to the length of the shaft, I'm having a hard time seeing how a longer shaft would interfere with clearance in the tilt up position? Pics would help a lot.

Go with a long shaft. Your not going to plain with that HP anyway. So better to have a good bite and be safer then sorry.
