Kicker mount on bowrider

I just talk to one boat shop to see if I could get a kicker mount mounted on a 17ft Glasstron Bowrider. The shop said it might cannot be mounted. Has anyone here done this? I know the transom is not that wide, but what about the angled sides (left or right)? Any info would be helpful.

Re: Kicker mount on bowrider

I recently read through a loooonnggg post about a guy that was rebuilding his boat. He had a friend/family member make a trolling motor mount for a bowrider. Seemed to be built rather rugged and might be the trick...or at least something to steal an idea from. I'll see if I can find it and post the thread and a pic for you.

If I don't post back in a day or so, look through the restoration threads.

Here are a couple of pics of what the guy had made. If you want to see more of the build, look through the restoration threads for a 1999 Bayliner. I think it was set up buy "Bear69cuda", or something like that.

If you are looking for a larger engine mount for a 17' boat, I don't think you would need more than a 6-10 HP. There are plenty of after market foldable/removable mounts for that.

Thanks guys, I have a garlick mount but the shop I called said they weren't sure it could be mounted. Where did your people mount theirs?

Re: Kicker mount on bowrider

The pics I submitted went on the Port bow for a trolling motor. Nice bracket.

Any decent sized kicker motor would be transom mounted. I can't imagine not having enough room to mount one. Send in a pic of the transom and the motor you want to mount.

I am going to try to send pics of the back of the boat and the 7.5 Gamefisher.

One additional picture. I have a Garlick 71038 kicker mount that I bought and now don't know if I can get it to fit somewhere on this boat. Any help anyone?

Re: Kicker mount on bowrider

Recce43, that is the kind of mount I have. Anyone have an idea how far I can safely extend a bracket out from the back of the boat to have room to mount a kicker. I have a 40lb electric trolling motor to use instead but it it a transom mount and I have not tried it on this boat. Would it push it?

Anybody have any idea if my electric 40# thrush will push this bowrider home in an emergency? Don't look like I'm going to get the kicker motor on this boat.

If there's not much wind or current and you're not too far...

It'd be better than trying to paddle.

Re: Kicker mount on bowrider

Hi
I am a newby but This is what I have done. I have the same problem 15 1/2 carvelle with a 85 hp outboard. Sits just like the pits above I took a 3/4 inch ply wood cut it as wide as the electric trolling motor mounts. I attached it to the transom right side of the motor because the steering bar is on the other side. I then cut a piece to sit on top of the transom, and bolted it to the already installed piece. I attach my 55lb trolling motor there. Only prob is that it can only turn so far to the right before I hit the motor with the prop. The left is fine, But hey when you are trolling you make wide turns anyway. Works great. When I want to run the big motor I simple pull up the trolling motor, and tip it all the way forward and away I go. Hope this helps in some small way with your problem.

I wouldn't rely on an electric motor as an auxiliary engine. Take off the trim tabs and get a hydrofoil. Then you'll have room for the kicker engine. ;)

Re: Kicker mount on bowrider

My 2 cents:

A 54lb electric is barely enough for my 15ft trihull. 40lb would be poor for your 17ft boat.

My transom has the same issue, only flat maybe 1-1/2 foot to either side of the outboard. I also have (homemade) tabs. I solved all that by making a long-armed, fixed but removable, troller mount out of Starboard that mounts to the flat of the transom to the left side of the outboard, but the vertical plate that the electric motor hooks to is offset to the left so that the troller has room to turn (360 degrees) without hitting the OB, even with the OB turned all the way toward the troller. And the OB can turn all the way to the side and just clear the bracket.

Granted you are talking about a much heavier kicker motor, but if you could get something like that fabbed from some sturdy aluminum or stainless plate it could work. Maybe a squared-off "u-shape" turned on it's side, with one arm of the u longer than the other...

Not pretty, but could work and should be fairly cheap compared to a retail kicker bracket.
