Kicker Mounting

Hey guys... I have a full width teak dive platform behind my boat. I am wanting to mount a kicker back there somewhere.... Anybody have any ideas as to how to do this? I can make a mount on top of the platform and put the kicker there. But the powerhead would more than likely get dunked in heavy seas... I would rather not have to cut a chunk out of my platform either. I know...it sounds impossible...but I have a few ideas and the thinking process has began! Maybe one of those straight drive weed whacker looking outboards that they use in Thailand and China would be the ticket? LOL...

Re: Kicker Mounting

I have the same platform on the back of my 21ft. Chris. I have a homemade bracket made from some 2x4 and pt plywood that mounts on top of the platform and is supported by 2 cables to help support the weight of the engine and bracket. I don't leave it on all the time. I have a cuddy and store the motor and bracket in there.. takes about 5 mins. to install it when its needed. It works good, although it would be very hard to install it and the motor if the water was rough..I don't have a digital camera for pics.. :(spend all my money on the darn boat.. :D

BoatDrinks,
I was thinking the same thing....I think I saw a mount for the situation we are in. I'll look around. BTW, what part of SW Florida are you in...I will be spending Aug 15th - Sept 12th in Florida for work. If there is a Cumberland Farms near you...I prob will be there.

-JustMrWill

Re: Kicker Mounting

Same thing on my Reinell. I haven't mounted the kicker yet, but I went down to the marina. They have a U shaped piece of steel that will mount right on, and provide you a bracket. I think they wanted 3 times what it's worth, and will have one made by a friend, but it's just a flat piece of steel that has 2 bends in it, and then a bend underneath to mount to the platform.
That doesn't solve your "dunking" problem, but I think that Flashback had a good idea, to just remove it when not in use.

I am thinking...you can make something that mounts on your deck simular to a trolling motor bow mount. Something like this (sorry for bad paint image)

Re: Kicker Mounting

Thanks for the reply guys...this project is still in the planning stages... Will...I live in Fort Myers...don't know anything about that farm you are talking about... Bring your boat down with ya when you come! Your drawings are somewhat what I have been thinking about... I just haven't had enough time to get on task. I will make up some mock brackets out of wood to play with and take it from there...

MrWill, that is exactly what I made, except it does not fold, and the mounting board is taller, and I have a couple of 1/8 inch 1 by 19 SS cable with turnbuckles that run from the top of the mounting board to the transom that take some of the stress off the swim platform...

Hey guys,

Just been reading your posts. 1 st question is it a permenant mount that you want, like bolted to the transom? If so, the traditional flip up bracked but with the extended pieces extended even further so that when it flips down it extends past the dive platform. I hope i'm not confusing things and I may not actually know what your boat looks like. But what i'm thinking will fold up kind of high when not in use. It needs to be kind of high so when it folds down it will clear the platform. I'm thinking say 3"x3"x1/4"or3/8" all. angle bolted to rear of transom 2"x 3/8" all. flat bar say 2 ft. long (long enough to clear platform) then all. angle again with wood to attach kicker to.

Hope this makes sence.

Beck

His boat is the same (or pretty darn close) to these pictures...I tried to find ones that showed the transom area best.

Sorry about image size.
Re: Kicker Mounting

yep...that's pretty much the same boat that I have guys. Thanks, Mr. Will...Hey, what are those holes behind your seats? Are they vent holes? Mine doesn't have them...but I have the full sun pad over the engine. Speaking of which...I am in the process of rebuilding the cushions for the sun pad...replacing the wood and re sewing some seams...always something, eh? The kicker project is still in the planning stages though... :)

Re: Kicker Mounting

Thanks for the pics...

I just was looking back and saw your reply...

The 2 Holes...I have no idea...I was thinking that they had something to do with venting...

I love your interior setup EXCEPT that your sun deck takes up too much deck space...I need the room for scuba equipment so I am redoing mine with a doghouse and 2 jump seats. I will be putting a padded board over that back section (where the 2 holes are). I'll take some more pics when it is done...have to first find the damn wire that is grounding out ARRGGHH!

-JMW

Re: Kicker Mounting

LOL! Don't mention it...I did remember that you wanted to see it, though. The sun pad does take up some space...but underneath it I have a jam up storage system. The canvas all stows there...even with the metal framing. I have two batteries and a cooler on the starboard side. To port, I have another cooler, a stern anchor, my chum setup, and storage room for my towable toys. Also...the babes really look great on that sun pad! LMAO!! Let me know how it goes with your projects... I still am at odds for a kicker mount. I ended up making a temporary one out of 2x4's and aluminum. It attaches through the swim platform and attaches with an alulminum plate with wing nuts. It works for now. In heavy seas, I can see the engine coming too far out of the water though...I haven't tested it in the salt yet. It worked like a charm in the river...but the waters are calm there. I am seriously considering making the boat a 3/4 swim platform job. Cutting off a chunk on the port side of the platform so I can have a kick up type mount. Decisions, decisions.... I wish my kicker was a four stroke too...then I wouldn't have to worry about another fuel tank! Gotta love the ongoing projects though... :)
