Does anyone know the largest size kicker I can mount on my 25 ft 1976 Bayliner Saratoga? The mount is on the fiberglass swim step, and I don't want to break the step or the mounting hardware. I found a used 18hp Mercury, and a 9.9hp Johnson, and don't know which to go with.

Thanks.

navyinak@yahoo.com

I wouldn't mount any motor on a swim step.
They are meant to hold weight pushing down, not the forward thrust of an engine. And are likely not strong enough to mount on either.

Replace the step with a motor mounting bracket, or even a setback jackplate.

Most of the swim step mounts I've seen are rated for 9.9 4 strokes, or 20hp 2 strokes. I would lean in the direction of the 18, as it has more oomph to combat current and winds than the 9.9 does. Nice feature for a trolling/get home engine. A buddy has a 24' Nisqually flying bridge, and his 15 hp does a good job. If the swim step is sound, it should be no problem. I think Roscoe may be picturing some flimsy teak affair, not your slab of 'glass. :D Lots of charter and pleasure guys here in SE Alaska have swim step mounted kickers. Here's a pic of a Saratoga with a kicker mount:

I agree with Fouled Plug. You may wish to consider a 4 stroke, this way you can just "T" into your fuel line. If you use a 2-stroke, you need to cary a tank on deck, oil, etc.
Good Luck,
-Nick

Thanks guys. I ended up with at 15 hp Evinrude that I got for a steal. The boat is actually set up with a T for a 4 stroke, but I am not comfortable with that. As a Navy engineer, I want a completely separate fuel supply for my emergency system. Call me paranoid.

Fouled plug, Where in SE Alaska are you? I am working for Admiral here in Juneau as part of his Navy Staff.

Good plan, having individual fuel systems. They should both run through a water seperating filter, especially here in Southeast. I'm in Ketchikan, but spent a year or so in Juneau. Coho fishing out of Auke Bay should be pretty hot right about now. :)
