My project boat is a 1974 18 ft Larson 1700 Shark. Dropped it in the water for the first time Yesterday. All went well except when I put it in reverse. When I put it in reverse the OMC drive kicked up out of the water. That happened every time I put it in reverse. Can someone provide me some insight? I cannot lift the outdrive by hand when it is out of the water.

You need to get a genuine OMC service and parts manual which you will need.
There is a snap ring in the tilt clutch housing that holds the clutch pack tight.
It has to installed with a press, most likely the ring is not seated and the clutch pack plates are loose. Remove the cover, remove the snap ring holding the gear then with the drive supported remove the clutch pack.
