Well I had put 2 new extinguishers on my boat this year. Today while out on the lake one of the red safety pins fell out on my deck by my feet. I thought "this is odd" and figured it for a manufacture mistake. So while anchored I check the one in the cuddy and it slid right out. So a quick question to my 3 boys if they pulled on them, my youngest admitted to yanking the pins out. So now on the quest to find pins, on 4 week old FE,s. Just wanted to remind ya guys that if you have curious young ones please advise them to leave them pretty red rings alone..........happy boating!!!!!

replace them with somehting that sticks, maybe a barely expanded cotter pin. Mine fell out in my car, and one of the children (I was driving carpool on the interstate) accidently set off the extinquisher with his foot! Delivered a load of ghosts to school that day....

Does this mean I'm not the only one with children who touch things?

Seriously, though, a fire extinguisher is not something to be put out of reach... not even out of the reach of little hands. Pretty amazing that my three year old son hasn't set one off... Always a good thing to be aware of. Thanks for the reminder!!!:)

In a strange sort of way the vision of this is kind of funny.

So I see that I am not the only one that has kids that like to explore. I doubt my son will do it again, but once I get the new pins I will pay a little closer attention to them now.

Not sure if it is USCG approved, but I've seen it done... Use a wire bread twist tie, or the type that used to come with garbage bags before all these new fangled built in handles! Give someone a little adrenline of a fire on a boat, and you won't even notice the twist tie, you will rip right through it.

you could also substitute a very light plastic zip tie if you put a notch into it with a side cutters. It will rip through with a decent tug.
