Kiekhaefer 1000 or 1250?

Power makes a difference, and this girl needs to know!

We are upgrading from a 65HP Merc and recently purchased what we thought was a 1968 Merc 1000 BP, however the serial number (2837868) puts it as a 1969 Merc 1250. The LU is the same as the 1250 and does not match the 1000BP.

Is there a way to identify, possibly from other parts, what this motor actually is? (I realize that many of the same parts are used on both models.) I'm guessing that the engine cover was scavenged from another outboard. The sticker on the LU is missing.

Any help is appreciated!
Thank you.

The 1250's intake port covers are unique. If the Stbd side of your powerhead looks like the one in the 1st pic, it's a 1250. If the intake port covers are slim and tall like the pic of an early-60's FGS Inline, you've got the smaller motor.

BTW the 1250 is one heck of a performer and the diff between a 100 and the 125 is remarkable.

And if you have a real set of 1000BP covers in good shape, they're probably worth some $$$ as that was a rare motor.

I would be happy if it was just a performer at this point.

I added a pic of the powerhead, as you can see we have it torn apart trying to fix the latest problem - won't run under a load. Only four days till the weekend, crunching time!

Thanks for the replies!

BTW the 1000BP cover is in good shape - I'll have to look into that $$$ to pay for all the repairs!

1. check compression
2. make sure it pees
3. if compression is good then adjust carbs while out on the water
start with 1 1/2 turn out on all carbs.throttle up if it fails adjust top carb 1/4 out.throttle up.if it fails adjust middle carb 1/4 out.....ect.

Thanks cell,

1. Compression checked by guy we bought from - all supposedly around 140
2. Pees now after new impeller and removal of 40 years of mud from the hoses
3. Just did a carb job and fuel pump job last night. Found a busted fuel line (hmmm....) and lots of black gum in the mid and lower carb.

Hoping to get it out on the water this afternoon to try again!

Sounds like heaven with muffs in the driveway - like hell in the water.

Thats a 1000 OldMerc Girl.... I know because I am looking at one (mine) right now, looks exactly like your picture. As previous users have said, the port covers on the 1250 were different than ours. These are the tall skinny plates just behind the fuel pumps (and where the top fuel pump would be if we had one). As for the BP? Does the lower end in front of the prop look like a bullet? I believe this was the race version of the 1000, mine is just the plain 'ol 69 Merc 1000 (red band).

is plain 1000

for the BP.

Notice the lower.

Thanks FZ1, that seems to be our consensus right now. We had read on some posts that some of the BP's were released without the racing unit - but who knows what you can believe on the internet! haha!

While we aren't real concerned with horsepower, it has become an issue when trying to get parts since the serial number does not match what we thought the engine was (even if it wasn't a BP.)

Either way, we can't wait to get her crankin this weekend!
