I have a 1998 Nitro 700 120 HP Mercury/Tracker. I cant kill the engine through the kill switch or ignition I have to choke it out. It happened all of a sudden. I replace the ignition but it did not solve the problem. No little about an outboard system. Thank you for your help

How should I test it? I believe everything else is working (gauges, lights, sonar, etc.)

I am not familiar with that particular motor, but the kill switch (and I believe the ignition as well) should shut off the motor by grounding it out. That said, there has to be some ground to the motor if the starter is operational. I would start by checking the main ground to the motor and all connections after it. If the motor is new to you, I would also look for any suspect connections or rewiring by the previous owner.

I just went through this on my tower of power assuming your wiring colour is the same There should be a black\yellow wire going into the coils. When this is grounded the motor shuts off and won't run. With your key off check it for ground, then trace the wire to find your fault. My issue was a wire pulled out of a butt connector by my key switch

When testing or looking for the ground, the boat does not “open” the ground it actually “closes” ground. I hope I didn’t confuse anyone.
