kill lanyard

Should I be able to run with the kill lanyard disconnected? Reason why I say that is because my motor wouldn't idle but I was running it before i realized it was haning off of my rod holder. I reconnected and having same issues. Just wondering if maybe something is wrong with that switch. I posted my issues earlier.

By disconnected, you mean like in yanked off the switch? It should NOT run that way. That is the purpose of it. When you fall out of the boat, the lanyard goes with you and the motor stops so you can get back in. If the motor continues to run after you fall overboard, the boat goes around in a circle and comes back to finish you off.

I tested the switch and it is bad. I bought a new switch but doesn't have the lanyard attachment so I'm thinking about wiring the kill wire and ground to a pole switch. DO you think this is wise? It's a flats boat that I use in backcountry not ocean. I have never attach the lanyard to my body in any of the boats I owned in the last 25 years. I rigged it to test and noticed that I cannot shut the motor down by turning the key anymore. All I did was disconnect the yellow/black wire.

The black and yellow wire is the kill wire; it acts by grounding the powerpack whenever you turn the key to off or if the emergency lanyard is pulled. If the black and yellow wire is disconnected, you will have no convenient way to stop the engine.

Some jurisdictions and most insurance companies require that you have the emergency kill switch.

There are many aftermarket lanyard switches available for fairly small cost. Check here at iboats.
