Kill Switch installation

Hello I have a 1988 Johnson 175hp. I bought the boat knowing it didn't have a kill switch installed knowing I could install one myself. It has the OMC controls. Motor starts and runs no problems. I received my kill switch I ordered and installed it. One wire to the black/yellow wire the other to ground both on the ignition switch. My problem is the motor will not start will the kill switch installed. With lanyard connected or disconnected no spark either way. I can unplug one of the wire from the kill switch and motor fires right up. Any hp would be appreciated.

If kill switch has 4 post swap them to other 2 ...switch has to be open to run and closed to stop.

Wrong type kill switch....if you take a ohm meter the 2 posts should be open with tether on and closed with tether removed.

It odd that there is no spark if the lanyard is fitted or not.
The wrong type would give a spark when the lanyard is not fitted, and no spark when it is fitted surely ?

Sounds to me that it is defective .. simple enough to check it out.

some lanyar kill switches will allow a restart if the captian went for a swim with the cord

yet... a helper could restart the engine before going over the falls.
