Kill switch question

I am installing a new kill switch to replace the button switch. It has a spade for a wire going to the magneto and one to the coil. Does it really matter which goes to which wire as I believe it is a normally open switch?

Re: Kill switch question

The connections do not matter on a single pole single throw switch of either type. You simply need to use the correct switch, likely the normally open switch.

Re: Kill switch question

Thanks for the reply. I am still a little confused. It is the Sea-dog universal switch. It says it has dual circuitry for ignition kill or magneto kill. So it has to spades marked for coil and two spades marked for magneto. ( 4 total) The service manual (which i left at home) shows the switch going to ground and not sure which, the coil or magneto.

I assume I would use either the magneto to magneto or coil to coil spade and not magneto to coil spade on the switch, right?

Thanks

Re: Kill switch question

I would think so. There are two different kinds of igntion sytems. The kind used on older mercury outboards and all sterndrives are a battery powered igniton. You must interrupt the +12VDC to kill the motor. I think that is your coil connections.

The other type of ignition which is used on most outboards is a alternator driven ignition. this type must be grounded to kill the ignition. You have a points - magneto ignition on your motor, correct? If so, it is the same basic kind as the magneto ignition you likely have. I think that is your magneto spade connections.
