Kill switch replacement

Last summer my kill switch went bad. I tried dis-assembling my commander 3000 and could not figure out how to remove the switch. Probably an easy task for most of you guys, but I'm a newbie. I ended up bypassing it for the summer. The marine wanted $125 to replace which seems a bit crazy. I want to attempt it myself again but would like to know exactly what I'm doing before-hand. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Kill switch replacement

They wanted 125 buks to replace a switch?!? Did you report them to the BBB? Good heavenz!
It's not a hard job,but you will need the shop manual (about 30buks), and a new switch (about 30buks) and maybee the ability to solder. If you don't, any auto shop can probsbly wire it in with the manual for 20buks or so, or maybee a friend that can solder.
You'll still be 40-50 buks ahead of the game..And have a shop manual, which will continue to pay dividends as long as you own the engine.
I can understand a marina wanting to make a reasonable profit. I can understand them putting a premium on thier time, due to the fact that they must maintain a workforce when buisness is slow,or busy...But it angers me to hear of shops doing this to people (or trying to, in your case). Congrats on knowing when to turn and run.

Re: Kill switch replacement

They told me it was 30 for the switch, 1 hour labor, plus tax. I have a neighbor that does soldering. As a matter of fact he helped me bypass the switch and did some solder work and wraped the wires with coating.(I didn't want to risk a fire)We had the shifter half way taken down and then it appeared almost as if the switch goes in from the back which means the whole shifter needs to be removed to get to it. Is it typical for these switched to go bad? The boat is only 4 years old and in brand new condition, except for switch. I'm almost considering leaving it as is for now. I very rarely wear the switch( shame on me) but I would like it incase I allow someone else to drive while I'm hangin on the tube. Anyone have a quick link for a service manual. Engine is a mercruiser 5.7L 350 1996 with a Alpha 1 drive and a commander 3000 shifter. Any other help would be apprecited.
