i seem to have a problem with my kill switch on a volvo 4.3 gs, and i dont understand the wiring. It seems to be wired from the ignition switch via the kill switch directly to a terminal on the alternator. when i switch the ignition on the kill switch gets hot and the rest of the electrics do not work, when i disconect it from the back of the alternator everything seems to then work, i have not tryed to start it like this, any ideas how this should be wired, and is the kill switch itself just a simple switch or something more complicated help?????????

simon

Re: kill switch wiring

it's pretty much a simple switch.. 2-pole/2connection make & break switch..

i'd wire it to/thru the actual key switch wiring..

find the two wires that feed the key switch..

pull one wire off .. route it to the kill switch an then take a NEW wire,,from kill,, back to the key switch post that the wire was removed from..

can't possibly cause any problems..

Re: kill switch wiring

How did it come to be wired this way?

It is not wired correctly. Wire it as crab bait suggests, making sure that you are wiring it into the ignition circuit, not the starting circuit. You want to disconnect the ignition circuit when the "kill switch" is operated (lanyard pulled). This will stop the engine.

Re: kill switch wiring

remove the purple wire from the keyswitch and route it to one post of the kill switch that is normally closed with the lanyard in place. the other terminal wires back to the spot you removed the purple wire from. actually all the wire pigtails should have been in the harness when it was new. there may be 3 or 4 purple wires on the keyswitch to power up gauges and accesory switches and such. dont take these to the purple wire feeding the engine. the swicth may not handle the electrical load of all of it but should handle the ign requirements. any purple wire on your harness will have 12+ from the keyswitch. not all wires may be used under the dash. if the wrong kill switch is used it may or may not work. whatever switch you use needs to be rated at at least 20 amps for 12vdc

Re: kill switch wiring

thanks rodbolt, the kill switch is wired how you said, we found the problem to be one of the wires on the starter solanoid had been moved when we re-re-routed the fuel tank filler tube, and was shorting across one of the other connections
