ok, i overheated dads boat, 1980 evinrude 35hp, replaced the water pump and it wont start, looks like water on the plugs. did a compression test on top cylinder and got about 45 but it wouldnt hold in the guage, as soon as i stopped cranking the guage it would go to zero. The bottom cylinder reads about 50 and stays in the guage when you stop. I did take all the bolts out and removed what i think is the head, for what reason i don't know, just trying to find something wrong and im sure i hurt it more... thanks in advance!

If I recall correctly you were removing the head on the low compression side in order to verify a blown head gasket caused by the overheat, so how does it look?

We were referring more to how do the cylinders look, not so much the head gasket. They should be smooth with no grooves or gouges.

reason y a head gasket would blow. would be cause of a overheat or a improper installation of that one i believe

ok, i got to the head gasket and it was for sure blown, huge hole blown right through. The cylinders looked and feel real smooth, no gouging or metal slivers what so ever. I got a new head gasket and water cover gasket and am going to replace today. Also, the thermostat was really messed up, stuck and looks bad, so i am just going to keep it out.

Re: killed dads boat part 2

I found the torque for the head bolts, 18 ft. lbs. but not the water cover. I put it back together and it fired and ran but water was coming out between the head and the water cover., so i tightened the bolts and broke one off in the head! so, i drilled it out and backed it out with an ez out. I had the bolts really tight and it was still leaking water around the spark plugs. any suggestions? thanks ps, im almost there!!
