I have a 1988 king cobra outdrive with a Ford 460 king cobra engine. I want to swap out the outdrive to a Volvo sx outdrive , but keep the engine. It has 400 hours on the engine and the risers, manifolds and engine is all in great shape. I have been reading on here and would like to know if the Volvo will match up to the engine. Also would like to know what exactly I would need part wise to do this. Is it as simple as switching them out or is there adapters needed? My water system is not a closed system. Hoping it is a bolt on procedure. Thanks in advance.

Howdy,

Welcome aboard.

Unfortunately, you cannot swap that drive to a Volvo easily. I actually have a PDF that I got from DonS, a former member (now deceased) that I can send you with Volvo part numbers and pictures but it will be pretty expensive and I am not sure those parts are still available from Volvo.......

It may not be worth it IMHO. You'd still be stuck with an engine where you still cannot buy manifolds and possibly risers.

If you want it, PM me your email. (SEND IT VIA PM please.....DON'T put your email in any open forum post!)

Good luck,

Rick

I'm not sure that the PM works yet.........I did try to upload it as an attachment and the file size is too big. Maybe I can split it...

That's what I did. Didn't I already tell you about in a different post?

To do the Volvo, you have to fabricate a raw water pump that would bolt directly to the engine, and buy a transom shield and a hose of other parts. I don't know if any of them are still available.

Ok, that PDF I attached is the actual Volvo publication for doing the change. DonS indicated in his writup that he used the 5.8L pump since there's no pump suggested for the 7.5L engine. The job he did was for a Bayliner 2858 so he used a DP-S drive.

If your boat is a BIG boat, you would definitely want to consider the DP-S (Duo-Prop) .

I removed my 460 King Cobra from my 1987 Four Winns 211 Liberator and replaced the entire mess with a 1997 Mercruiser 7.4L Bravo III

Here's where I told you about it in your winterizing thread http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...utdrives/8581616-another-winterizing-question

Scroll to the end......

I did a little more searching around and that Volvo kit is listed as NLA by h ttp:// w w w .marine parts express .com/conversionkits A search at Volvo indicated the same thing. There may be a few of them still around but expect to pay maybe DOUBLE, triple or more times the original price of around $800 for it.

I would still suggest not spending a lot of money on an engine and drive that are fully obsolete. You can part it all out and get a fair amount of money if you're patient.

Does this one give you problems now? If not, I would run it as is and just be on the lookout for a "prop-to-pulleys" unit you can swap in later, like the 454 Bravo III HT32B has done.

There's essentially 3 disadvantages of waiting until something breaks.

1. You get stranded (maybe ruining your vacation/outing etc)

2. Less money from broken stuff when you do try to sell it.

3. Down time possibly during the time you really want to use the boat!

Since the boat is running "ok", I would run it another summer season, but I would start looking NOW for a replacement engine, drive and associated parts.
I literally "fell" into the Mercruiser package by luck as far as timing goes.

It's much better to be looking for a replacement package under NO pressure instead of having a broken boat and being under a time crunch to get it done before the next summer vacation etc.....
