well i woke up the boat today from a LONG winters nap. i put the muffs on and got her fired up. i noticed the returning water coming out of the upper unit by the transom mount. i had same warm air coming from the prop hub. my question is the exhuast only supposed to come out of the prop. I dont know much about them. any input would be great!

It's possible that your fresh water impeller is not working as well as it should. You therefore aren't getting the volume of water through the system you should be. You should also verify that your exhaust bellows isn't cracked and dumping the water between the drive and transom.

ok thanks. when i out the fresh water impeller it seemed to be in good shape, but it seems relly tight in the housing it sits into. is this normal?

Ok, you said the water is coming out from the upper part? Are you refering to the holes on either side of the Gimball housing? If so that is normal. There should be some water passing through the hub, but at idle and on the hose, most will exit from the exhaust under the housing. And yes the impeller should be snug.

Howdy,

Your exhaust bellows (if installed) might have holes in it. New ones have holes all the way across them and those holes are mounted down so they drain.

It's normal to see water and have exhaust come from the it.

When I had the 460 King Kobra installed in my boat it had no exhaust bellows.

The boat originally came with thru-hull exhaust and when my brother had it he had a Y-pipe installed with Capts call..... the installer never installed an exhaust bellows. He ran the boat for about 10 years without an exhaust bellows.

It didn't seem to hurt anything at all......(I fixed it by replacing the whole sterndrive with a Mercruiser 454 Bravo III.......yes, I suppose that was over-kill......but it solve many "problems!)

Cheers,

Rick

For that engine totally normal, mine (same 4.3/Cobra) does the same thing, most of the water exits under the gimble housing, just a little exhaust will exit out the prop when it's idling on the muffs.
The exhaust bellows ususlly has slits all across the bottom to let it drain and prevent excess backpressure as noted.
