KING COBRA OUT DRIVE FIX HELP

1992 KING COBRA outdrive, I was boating full throttle and the out drive came out of gear. The prop will spin freely both ways with no grinding sound. But it it's a hard spot when turned each way and won't continue to spin.

Any ideas on where to start?

It's 5.7, KING cobra outdrive on a 92 chris craft. Any advise would be great!

first, welcome aboard

is this a new to you boat or a boat you have owned a while?

if new to you, did you simply buy it and drop it in the water, or do all the maintenance the prior owner neglected?

start with draining the oil from the drive to see if the water fairy (bad seal causing issues) or the glitter fairy (toasted bearings and cone clutches from lack of oil) has visited you.
