Re: King vs. Cobra swap

Howdy,

I'm surprised someone didn't jump right on this.....

There's quite a difference between the one that is on the back of a 302 vs a 460.

The 460 model is larger (holds almost twice as much oil for one thing)

And it's a higher ratio and quite a bit heavier for the much larger torque of he 460.

I just did a quick comparison of the transom mounts, inner transom plate, gimbal etc and all the part numbers are different for each unit.

You can look at the part numbers and illustrations at http://epc.brp.com/ (You don't need to put in an email address...)

I believe the smaller (dog-clutch) Cobras are for most part interchangeable. (except certain ratios are for certain engines .....4, v-6, v-8 cyl)

I am guessing that you found a sweet deal on an 89 King Cobra (460 model dog-clutch) drive to replace your broken drive?

The King Cobra that went behind the 460 really only fits on that particular transom mount. I don't think you can put one on the back of any of the smaller engines (and you wouldn't want to)

Your best bet might be to sell the King Cobra drive (if it's your's and in good shape.....they're sort of rare) And check into the SEI conversion. The SEI conversion kit was designed to replace all the smaller dog-clutch Cobras.

I sold my King Cobra for about $1400 and the guy was happy to find one so cheap.

You can buy a brand new SEI drive with a 3 year warranty for just about the same......I think the "kit" is about $350 or so...

Re: King vs. Cobra swap

OK, Thanks Rick, from what I've found out so far, I think from '89 to '93 will fit mine, I've just been trying to find out what will, and won't bolt up. I appreciate your input, and the search goes on as the days begin to get warmer and the anticipaition to get back out there on the lake increases...LOL..

Re: King vs. Cobra swap

If the question is whether a dog clutch Cobra is interchangeable with a Cone clutch Cobra, the answer is no.

both types of Cobra drive were sold as King Cobras at one time or another which made the term useless for identifying drives.

Swapping dog clutch Cobra drives is more complex than you'd think too because they changed linkage adjustment procedures and shift rod heights etc., just about every model year

I have all the shift linkage adjustment videos here on VHS. Someday I'll try throwing one up on youtube and see if the copyright cops pull it.
