I got invited to do a little offshore fishing today. We went to some of the rigs and trolled and drifted ribbonfish for kings. I caught 3 kings up to 25 lbs. What a blast! I inshore fish all the time, but now I have offshore on my mind. Now I just need to convince my wife I need a bigger boat ;) .

Re: kingfish

I know what you mean...a 41 lb smoker of a king caused me to buy an offshore boat and I have yet to regret falling in love with the offshore pelagics....been chasing them around now for 4 years....try out a fifty pound cobia and see what that will do to your inshore fishing !!!

Try landing a #92 Cobia and a #75 Red Drum off the beach using a surf rod with #17 mono and you'll sell the boat. :D:D

I spend 30-40 days a year offshore. To this day, my two biggest thrills have both come off the beach.

I would love to surf fish, but in south Mississippi you are somewhat restricted on the species available to catch and those species are just not attractive to me.....hook into a marlin just once and you will buy back that boat you just sold....I did not realize that cobia were that far north, or were you further south when you caught him ? nice size cobe by the way

A lot of people not familiar with the Mid-Atlantic are quite amazed with the Sport fishing that is available between Cape Hatteras and Ocean City, Maryland. We?re right on the northern edge of the southern species and the southern edge of the northern species. We get the sotuher species in the summer and the northern species tend to winter over here. Makes for some pretty darn good fishing 365 days a year.

Have to remember that the Gulf Stream is right outside the door (one of the few places in the US that you can fish for pelagics within sight of land) You have the mouths of the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays, and Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds all converging in the same area. All four of those bodies of water are the spawning grounds and nursery for large numbers of near and inshore species from up and down the coast.

BTW: No need to buy back the boat?..never got rid of it. ;)

Hey TNDUC,

I live in CC and go out through packery to the rigs in front of jp luby and bob hall...what a blast--in a 20 ft flatbottom. As you know, the seas get so calm down here during summer that it's no problem even in flats boats (my buddy goes out in his shallow sport 18). Just be safe and smart about it---never go out if you even think it "might be a bit rough" or if it might get rough, and make sure your rig is in excellent running condition.

It's great to be able to go offshore in the morning, catch some fish, then head into the flats to sight cast reds in 8in of water--all from the same boat!

I love this city.

Re: kingfish

south texas...you sound like a bit of a "Thrillseeker" - in Mississippi we have to run at least 30 miles to reach a 100' of water and usually when we start out the seas are smooth durring the hot months...the flip side to that coin is the afternoon thunderstorm that we always have to dodge or go through when running back in....sounds like CC is an ideal place to live if you love to fish...I wish we had deeper water closer in....but it is not uncommon to see the bay boats at the 30 mile rigs

I've got a 17 ft CC. It is not a flats boat (but does draft only 1 ft), so has plenty of freeboard. I am waiting for a bluebird day to run it out to the nearshore rigs. I've only been living here for about 8 months, so am still looking for the hotspots to fish. But it is great to have a boatramp 10 minutes away. Before I moved here I fished Port Mansfield exclusively.

Re: kingfish

Went to the closest rigs off Bob Hall; it was a rough morning. BUT--we caught some big fish. 40lb; 25lb; 15lb; and I lost a huge one. That's what I get for making fun of my buddy who lost a big one with me last wkend.

I think the schoolies have left. We have been averaging about 10 fish about 10lbs every time out; this weekend we only caught one snake. my buddy went out this morning and got skunked at both the southern rigs and northern ones.

Oh well, maybe they're gone, maybe not. Guess we'll have to wait until next weekend to find out:eek:
