Knock in the stern drive

Ok guys i have a 1980 glastron with omc stern on it model #98073 was running it when it developed a knock or clunking in the outdrive not in the motor where could this possibley be at i do have the clymer manual for the stern drive but dont wanta tear into it any more than i have to MANY THANKS BILL:(

There's a universal joint in there may be acting up. Either that or you lost your alignment with the engine. Either way, the outdrive need to come off and a look see what gives.

Hes got a stringer mount, neither of which applies. A broken gear tooth can cause knocking and possibly the ball gears.

Trim the drive all the way up and look between the drive and the transom.

ok found out what the knock was took the upper gear case off and the main shaft coming in from the motor had the bearing on the end of shaft completly gone OUCH but at least i know now what it was going to see if i can find a used gearcase for it MANY THANKS BILL:(

Gonna have to buy used as new parts don't exist anymore for those drives.
