I have a 1992 19.5" stingray runabout with a 431A 4.3 volvo penta and 290DP lowerunit. After changing the bellows for the u-joint i took the kids out tubing about 20 minutes into pulling them the engine starting making a noise that reminded me a cyclender missing on my motorcyle. Oil pressure and temp were good to go, maybe a little hotter than normal.
I got the boat out of the water and pulled the valve covers none of the rockers seemed loose, i was able to move them about an 1/8 of an inch either way, when running at idle oil was coming from all the pushrods or the rockers and back down to the blcok, I checked the timing, changed the plugs, and took a look at the distributor, everything looked good. Put boat back in water and now it starts to make the noise as soon as i accelerate and the noise remains but get a little quieter once i reach crusing speed. Boat does not seem to get to WOT (4400-4600) it may of gotten to 4100 but seem to be getting hot so i backed of when it did not seem to want to get to 4600 and brought the boat back.
With out me tearing the thing apart is there anything i should try changing out before i head to the real mechanic at the local Boat shop.
I was thinking plug wires next, you can really hear the noise coming out of the exhuast more than standing beside the engine so i am still chasing the possibility of one of the pistons not getting fire?
