Forgive me if this has been asked before. I sold my boat that was a I/O Mercruiser so I was on that forum alot.

I am looking to purchase another boat and found a sweet deal on a '90 Bayliner but it has an L-Drive engine. I am not familiar with them and haven't read anything good about them today online.

What exactly is the deal with L-Drives. It runs great and is strong. First red flag is the fact it was only produced 2-3 years I read. Secong red flag I have read is unavailablity of repair parts / knowlegeble techs.

2 big negatives. Should I stay away from this boat? It is in near mint condition otherwise. Thanks.

Also stay away because the wife is gonna be mad when it breaks down and you can't get it fixed, and you can't sell it.

You may have found the last one still running ;). Outside of just a bad design that somehow made it to market, they have a real weak spot in the driveshaft coupling and when that part strips out that its it, nobody makes that and the boat is now just driveway candy (if you can get back to the ramp and get back on the trailer that is...).

Re: L-Drive Opinions

Had I read this two years ago....I would not have bought my L drive....1989 Bayliner. However, I have found the parts needed...just expensive. Previous owner did not take care of the boat. Now that I have been working on it, though it is a relative simple design to work on....
