Model 125LD9B. 4 cylinder . I Know this motor is a problem, but the boat is sweet. I Need info on where I can obtain parts and info. The boat is a 1989 Bayliner capri with the 1989, 125 hp force L drive. The bottom 2 cylinders are flooded with water. Top two cylinders have overheated pistons. Don’t know where the water is coming from. I need advise. Is there any other engine I could replace this with, such as a outboard. The boat was specifically built for an L drive. I have already put a grand in to the engine. I cant find the problem .Any info will be appreciated.

Re: L Drive Problems

No other motor can be used, unless you gut the transom area, reinforce, and completely rebuild the transom.

You can get a complete rebuilt powerhead for $1200-$1600.

The drive units are a nightmare, no parts available.

Has this boat been used in saltwater?
If so, probably corroded away from the inside.

If not corroded internally, usually a complete set of gaskets and seals for the water jacket, head, and exhaust, should stop any leaks.

Put a grand into it?
What have you done/replaced?

Re: L Drive Problems

I would do a compression check first, check all 4 cylinders. Get a bvase reading for future reference.

Then pull the head and replace the gasket.
Then pull the exhaust port manifold and replace both gaskets.

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...464/19.png&inbr=1313&bnbr=80&bdesc=POWER+HEAD

Other posibility is that the water is coming in thru the drive unit somehow, then up thru the bottom of the powerhead.

Yes, the compression check would be great but I already went ahead and took of the head and exhaust gasket. Should I use these to check compression or buy new gaskets.

Re: L Drive Problems

Have to start with the basics to narrow it down.
1 check the kill switch.
2 compression
3 spark
4 fuel

Re: L Drive Problems

How do I check the chocke solnoid and where is it located?
Also my shifter is not working, do you know why it would not move?

Re: L Drive Problems

might be a seized lower unit, check the shift screw. choke solnoid is located between the carbs, a little roud thing with a steel cylinder going into it. operates both chokes.
