Why must i always have a problem?!?!

1988 15 hp Evinrude

Put it in the tank yesterday to get it kickin and tune it. Ran fine.

Put it back on the stand and this morning i was greeted with a nice puddle of brand new lower unit lube slowly dripping from where the prop mounts to its axle. Took off prop and also released a flood of more l/u lube. Alot more. Puddle did not SEEM to contain any very much water in it.

Question: Does the doule ring thing that goes directly behind the prop on the axle fit snugly when mounted? cause i noticed it has a "champfer" around it and a matching champfer on the motor piece its mounting to, but mine has a gap between those two piece that i cant seem to flush up.

Is this the cause of my puddle?

Thank yall for any help!

The two seals' metal faces touch each other. They have to fit tight enough to stand up to around 15# pressure from inside, without leaking or blowing out. If they don't fit, take them back to the dealer with the lower unit and they will make it right.

You are almost there, don't give up! I was watching the gearcase that sold on Ebay today: Went for $305. plus s&h. web page

Ok i cant get the faces to flush up. I have absolutely no explanation. Theres just like a 1/8" gap between em and I dont wanna force anything. Any suggestions? I know im not giving yall alot to work with but im stumpped on this one. Does it have to be in a certain gear or somthin? There doesnt appear to be anything preventing it from sliding on the axle. If yall need more info from me please ask. Ill try to learn more and post more tomorrow.

Sounds like you need to seat the outer seal. See if you can match a clean cut piece of copper pipe to the outer diameter of the seal and tap it into place. I don't know the diameter of the seal.

Normally the seals are forced into the housing with a "special tool" (or the back side of a socket), before the prop shaft is inserted.

Where you have the unit reassembled, you would need to try the pipe or something or pull it apart again.
