boat listed below.
just R&Red the diaphram in my fuel pump. it was leaking.
couldn't find fuel pump bolt torqe specs. in service manual #C-90-71707, found em in a clymers. ? surly i can read. what page is that info on in the oem manual? nore did i find in either manual the torque spec. on the 6 screws that bolt the two halfs together. with the diaphram in the middle. i just screwed em done pretty tight. and i dislike doin em that way. there must be a spec.?
which way on the gasket. oem just said put the gasket on and bolt it up. clymers said use some sticky sealer or something. both sides. i bet i had the 1975 gasket on it. it didn't appear oem used sticky sealer, so i didn't either.....
clymers mentions, R&R my old style fuel pump with one that meets uscg regs. i could believe mine don't. i've always wondered if my rig is to old to have the fuel pump that failes and dumps back into the carb. i have no clear fuel line. no j-tube into the carb. just in and out. so is there really a replacment fuel pump that fits my L6? complete with J-tube? i feel what i got is oem. it's exactly the same as my 72 L6 also. a carter....do i just have real old technology and how does that effect me and the uscg.....

as for the rest of my fuel system. i don't think the uscg would take kindly to me. no fuel tank shut off. no anti siphon valve. no b1 uscg approve fuel hose. spring clamp on fuel pump in side. i just detected these last items. the to do list is gettin longer. fuel system issues at the top. anything i'm missin? at least it's got proper out to carb metal fuel line.....

Re: L6 fuel pump

My 1967 boat has no anti-siphon, but it's original fuel pump DID have the glass bowl style diaphragm failure indicator.....
My 1970 Mercruiser inline engine had the extra fuel line to the carb for rupture.

If I were you, I would just buy a used marine pump on eBay that has the extra line.

When torque specs are not given, use standard torque values. Most service manuals have a section on standard torques.

Re: L6 fuel pump

kdjkdj, interesting. i've had 2 L6's in different boats. both had the carter fuel pump. no, glass, no line to carb. yours are older and had one or the other. i wonder whats up. i wonder what the reg was back then. did yer mfg. go overboard and supply better pump than the boats that i've had? i feel mercruiser provided both my carter pumps. thanks for the tip on ebay.
thanks for the tip on standard torque values too. that's what i end up resorting to. it just bums me when i think it ought to be in my oem service manaul and i probalby just can't read. at least can't find it anyways........i'd still think there'd be a torque value for the screws that hold the pump together though. that's got the diaphram in between and is variably crushable i'd think.....
