Lacking power

Hello,
This is my first post here so I wasn?t sure where to post this. I have an 85 Larson 19? open bow with a 3.8 185 hp Mercruiser with an Alfa 1 drive 1:84:1 ratio that I just got. According to the paperwork it weighs 2235lbs without the motor, so I?m assuming around 2800lbs with the motor and full 20 gallon tank and driver. Here is my problem. It came with a 14.25 x17? aluminum prop on it. The boat will do 35 mph WOT at 4700 rpm. I put a Quicksilver SS 14.25 x 19? on it and the best it would do is 32mph at 4200 rpm WOT. The manual states 4400 to 4800 WOT. I have read everywhere on forums that I should only be loosing about 200 rpms and that this motor has enough hp to pull this prop. I tried pulling a 145lb expert skier and it was all the boat could do to get him out of the water and it doesn?t plane for a long time. Shouldn?t this boat be able to perform better than this? Even with the 17? prop it is disappointing in the hole shot and takes from dead stop to plane more than 100 feet. I had the timing and carb adjusted from a professional in the area and the motor seems to run good except for a tiny flat spot when you first hit the gas. I guess my question boils down to how can I improve the performance of this boat so it will pull a 200lb skier and not drown them in a deep water start? What prop would be the best? I have checked around and there is no ?try it and see? program for props around here. Thanks in advance.

I forgot to mention that the motor is new and only has about 20 hours on it and the compression is 150 to 160 on all cylinders. with new plugs, wires, cap, rotor and points.

Re: Lacking power

I don't think so. The manual says it is model 185R and it is 185 hp V6 3.8
It is smaller than the 4.3 by 15 horse and the motor year is 1980 to 1984.

Re: Lacking power

see a dealer close by and see if they have loaner props to test your boat, depending on what you want either hole shot and low top end or do you want top end and bad hole shot, try to find a prop that gives a good all round, and settle for that.

Ayuh,....

Just another WAGuess,......

Is the Outdrive Gear Ratio stilll the Stock Ratio,..??

If it's got a 1.5:1, V8 Ratio,...... It'll be a Dog....
Probably needs a 1.8:1.....

Re: Lacking power

If you were turning 4700 with the 17" prop, then you were already propped correctly. If you wanted better hole shot and harder pulling power for skiing, then you went the wrong direction with the 19" prop. Your 500RPM loss is normal. As a rough guide each inch in pitch change will equal 200rpm, you increased by two inches, so 400rpm. The other 100rpm is just a result of your lack of power at those revs.

Bottom line - your speed sounds about right for that size boat and power. Remember, 185 is crankshaft power - at the prop you probably are closer to 150.

Also, ignore any paperwork you have that list any weights. They were probably wrong then, and 20+ years later... not even close. Take the boat to a scale and have it weighed. I'll bet you are suprised. Don't forget to add your weight and any passengers, they won't be in there at the scale, but will be when it is in the water.

Re: Lacking power

Thanks for the responses. I guess I will put the 17" back on there. Oh and Bond-O the gear ratio is 1:84:1 acording to the tab on the outdrive and the book shows that there was a 1:65:1 optional. I don't understand your ratios that you put down. So maybe a 4 blade 18" sounds like a happy medium then huh? Just thinking out loud.

Wrong direction again - that swap will typically drop your WOT 300-400 RPM. You will lose hole shot and probably a little top end due to you engine not having enough power to spin that much prop. A 16" 4 blade, should improve planing performance and give you WOT close to what you have now.

Again you need to have the boat weighed. If 2200(W/O engine) is accurate, then add 900lbs for a V6 and drive, plus gear, plus fuel, plus passengers and you are well over 3500lbs.
