Hey folks,

Just got back from a great trip up in the Yosemite/Tahoe area. Yup they are about within 170 miles of each other :) Anyhow, we spent one day out in the Sevylor raft on Lake Tahoe's north side. I did not realize just how big this lake was and deep. We luckily were under pristine conditions. The water was low according to locals so this particular dock and launch at Kings Beach was mainly for us yakers, canoeists and rafters.

... once underway we couldn't get over how clear the water was. Crystal clear, emerald like. You could easily see bottom up to 20, 30 feet in my estimation. We hugged the shorelines watching yakers, fishermen and beach goers. One thing we did not know was you have to get two fishing licenses, Nev & Calif. And also if you have a large boat(traditional) to launch it must pass inspection at $125. Guess mussels are a major concern. Well hope you enjoyed the pics. The raft did great. Went without the rigid deck this time since I could not fish... maybe next time.

Cheers

Re: Lake Tahoe, North Shore

Glad you had a good time!!

The boat hull inspection is only about $30 (variable depending on launch location) for vessels under 26 feet. A bit more for larger boats, and slightly less for 19 and below possibly. If you just boat at Tahoe it's a one time thing for the season as long as you ask for "the sticker". If you pull your boat out on the trailer they will, upon request, place a sticker tag on your bow winch and, as long as it's not broken (didn't boat anywhere else), they will waive the inspection fee the next time you line up for the ramp. They may inspect you but it won't cost you anything more.

Kings Beach is convenient and a good spot for many things but it is one of the least spectacular in terms of beach and water sights. It's great you had the ability to get around in your rig to see more of the scenery.

The middle east shores on the Nevada side have some of the clearest water and the best beaches by far. Depth visibility of 60-70 feet are likely on good light days. There are many "blue lagoons" and spectacular natural granite boulder harbors in otherwise hard to reach locations fort non boaters, and miles of fine white sandy beaches to comb at will. The water colors are turquoise to cobalt blue and all shades in between. Almost a Greek Island feel. The middle West shores are also truly incredible, but with fewer white fine sandy beaches to park at. The trade up for the downscale beaches are calmer waters on wind days, warm sandy shallows (+/-10 feet) running light to deep turquoise blue that run 1/2 mile off shore, spectacularly lush alpine forests and uncommonly beautiful mountain scenery ashore. And of course you have Emerald bay just south of this middle west shore area.

Woops, I may have just gotten in trouble with my fellow local Tahoe boaters for spilling the beans. ;) We're usually pretty quiet about this stuff.

Re: Lake Tahoe, North Shore

BTW I think the $125 is the season pass price? ie., some will go to other lakes but they want to hit Tahoe in between trips, etc. So the sticker trick thing won't be applicable. This mussel inspection program is new this year so I would not be surprised at variations to the programs going on that I might not be aware of at different launch sites. One rumor floating about is that some of the Quaga and Zebra Mussel infestations are being spread by water fowl. It is suspected that the larvae are living in the feathers for weeks at a time during migratory patterns. If that is true I'm not sure how much a boat inspection program will do to eliminate the problem, but I suppose we have to start somewhere, and the water fowl thing has not be conclusively proven yet.

Cave Rock and Sand Harbor are the main ones that I'm most familiar with in NV. This is a low water year, but through the end of July it seems a safe bet at least at Sand Harbor for smaller boats - 23 feet or below. Right now they are still getting 30 footers in at Sand Harbor but for how long? Not sure. Safe bets for launching in deeper harbors are Obexers in Homewood and the Coast Guard Ramp in Tahoe City.

...hiya Eddie,

Ya this was the inspection price quoted to a gentleman we chatted with at the lodge. he had his boat there and was shocked at the price. so much so he had to talk it over with his family. what we can say is that there were hardly any motor boats on the lake, and i mean we saw a few at most on a weekend... thanks for the tips and descriptions on the different places along the lake. we loved it and hope to return soon. prices are good right now on hotel stays as the economy recovers. one other thing we did that was awesome was ride our bikes from Tahoe City up to Squaw Valley. The bike path is paved and follows the truckee river. it was an excellent ride.

The upper Truckee River trail is a good local gem. We use that trail often too.

I think what happened on yours and the other guy's inspection fee, is on account of the new program at the time. It seems for a while nobody knew what to charge, and rates were in wide variation. In fact, in the Nevada State Parks and the Coast Guard Ramp, there was no fee until 01 June. After June 1st, the details were much more widely consistent and the return boater tag program was in acceptance. Too bad for the confusion, that's got to be an early mistake in the program implementation. I could be mistaken, but based on many personal boating embankments this season and the consistent story in place now, I doubt it.
