ok i just like to know why a procedure is used. i know but its how i understand things. when gluing the transom together i read that you apply resin to both sides of the ply and allow it to dry half way. then put mat wet and clamp. what is the waiting for. does it make it thicker? is it for adhesion? i have people that tell me thats a waste of time. so im asking for why it makes it better. yd i believe you 100 percent but i like to know why a step is important thanks jim

Re: laminating question

If you don't Seal the wood with resin before applying the CSM mat you will get dry spots and air pockets due to the wood soaking up the resin instead of the mat. You let it dry to a tacky stage (this only takes about 15 mins) to make it easier to lay the mat down smooth prior to wetting it out with resin.

I don't laminate my plywood with resin and mat. I use Titebond III wood glue and screw the two pieces together with a couple dozen deck screws. I then coat the entire transom with Resin, let tack, then apply CSM.

Either way works just fine.

I agree with Wood about using the Titebond III glue. As long as you cover both sides of the transom peices that go together with the glue and get a good even coat, it will be as strong as the wood itself.
Make sure the wood is clamped flat.
I did the resin and csm on my transom and if I had to do it again I would use the Titebond III. It is alot cheaper and you don't have to worry about the glue drying before you get your parts together. The resin and csm must be done before it kicks or it's a no go..

Re: laminating question

Two things can happen if you don't pre-coat the wood, the first is like Wog said, the wood will suck resin out of the mat. The other is that because the wood is filled with air, as the resin begins to gel it heats up and can become rather warm sometimes, the heat expands the air in the wood and it results in bubbles forming between the glass and wood.

thats what i thought... i figured it had to do with air and resin being sucked it. thanks i will use titebond for that. i guess i could have used the plywood for the deck for the example. i just read a thread on a transom repair and it was stuck in my head. i told someone that i felt it sealed the wood from soaking the resin out of the mat

Sure you want to do this with wood glue ?

All things left aside I can tell you that the wife and kids are at dinner tonight ... I have some time to answer ( with luck on your part ) some direct questions that you had for me :) .. You only posted about 1.5 hours ago ..

Okies .. the wood has to be Prepped .. that means that you have to resin coat it until it can no longer accept the resin coating. Some may disagree with this .. but you have to remember the Tightbond(x) shrinks at a rate of 50%. meaning that every nook and cranny will already be a void.

Sure you can put extra 'glue' on there .. but its not really a true Lamination. it will shrink up to Nothing ..no bond at that point and wasted glue.

Even the Tighbond ( if you wish to call them up ) does not recommend putting transoms together. They will tell you its not for that purpose/application.

You need your ply to stop drinking the resin before you try to Bond/lam two pieces of wood. .. and dependent on the wood you might have more filling before the bond is even considered..

Flat on flat man .. any lam has to be prepped and ready to be Non absorbent to resin and then prepped properly.

You want to cheat .. you will have voids.

Search out the forum .. I am right ..

Search out the forum 'why my glass has air bubbles in it" .. I would be the 3rd person to tell them the same thing .. but after 34 pages of 'why did it happen' .. I give up.

Prep is KEY !!

If you dont have that .. then your boned right from the start.

Trust ol' YD.
