Land and Sea Torque Shift prop?

I've read about these props that "shift" to a higher pitch as you speed up and the Land and Sea seems to get great reviews. I am in the market for maybe a 20-22" SS prop (see other prop post from TMH) and I just saw one of these on eBay.

My questions are,

1. If they seller says it came of a Mercury 225 hp engine, would it work on my mercruiser Alpha One - somehow I seem to think mercury and mercruiser are the same hub in that hp range, but I really don't know.

2. Any BAD results with these? I've read lots of good reports, just wondering what the down side can be. Do the springs wear out and then are hard to find replacements for?

Thanks. I'm narrowing down my options and found these very interesting (IF I can get one for a reasonable amount of $$$),

Re: Land and Sea Torque Shift prop?

I used one on my stern drive boat (23', 4500# Alpha 1). I found it worked as advertised and did make a significant difference in performance. I could really feel the difference when the prop "shifted". Biggest drawback IMO is that it takes a lot of foolin' to get it just right for a particular boat. The springs and cams are pretty reliable, but I heard that the prop ears had a tendency to come off...never had that happen to me! Bottom line- if you like fiddling with your boat to maximize performance, then it would be a good investment.

Land and Sea has stopped making the Torque Shift, but I read that someone bought the tooling and is continuing to sell replacement parts for them.

Hmmm...I think my Torque Shift is still around here somewhere. I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Thanks, arks - why'd you stop using yours? Will a mercury OB prop fit Mercruiser Alpha One?

Because I sold the boat- and that prop was too expensive to sell with it. :D

I'm not sure about fitment. I know they made 'em for stern drives as well as outboards. If I find my prop, I'll gladly take a picture of the hub.

I can't speak for the torque shift but you might go to the prop store here and see if the big outboard prop numbers match the outdrive numbers.

The ouboard and SD use the same prop hub unless the outboard is the newer "fat shaft" style on the XS series.

As for the TS prop itself I have personally seen 2 come apart. I don't want any boat with one anywhere near me or my family.

Bondo, isn't that kind of playing "dirty pool" to prop jump me like that? I hope you enjoy MY prop.

I'll make sure I never reference any item I'm interested in buying again.

Crap, they don't come up on eBqay very often and that one was underpriced.

Re: Land and Sea Torque Shift prop?

Bondo, just wondering how the prop you "stole" from me is working out? I need to live out my prop dreams through you now because I'll never get one like that at nearly that price. So please keep me updated on how great my boat might have gone with that prop!

Is there anything else I can find for you that I want myself? I'll search eBay for more great stuff for you at a steal price. If I find something I need/want, I'll stop by here to make sure you have a chance to bid against me for it or use Buy it Now.

For that reason alone, I'm not all That sorry...

Btw,.... I Stole nothing,... No dirty pool,..

Re: Land and Sea Torque Shift prop?

I hope you all realize that LAND & SEA props are no longer available, although there are still some parts still kicking around. They were probablly the best designed "shifting" props made, and if properly maintained gave no problems. Any that came apart were badly mistreated. Pitch range was governed by blade # and shift caricturistics were controlled by the cams and spring combinations. I have hear rumors that someone in the states has taken over production of them ,but is using different cams that will not interchange with the old ones.
