My first thread "Started on the Lark" brought good suggestions. The motor's apart and I've been making a list of everything I'd like to replace as a matter of coarse however I'm suffering from "Shell Shock" over the price of bearings. As a result I'm giving the originals another look. First of all the crank looks outstanding in all respects, barely a stain on any of bearing surfaces and sure they will all polish out easily. The needles all look great too. A couple of slight lines on one or two of the lower needles is all. I do plan on replacing all of the connecting rod big end bearings because even though they are not damaged as far as I can see, some have a slight bluish hue, certainly not that angry dark "I got way too hot color". I do have a question about fit or play of the bearing assemblies on the shaft though. Simple question. Should the Upper, Mid, and Lower caged bearings wiggle a bit? How about the assembled rod bearings and the piston pin bearings? What are some of your thoughts these bearings as described. And continued use? Thanks - Pete

Any with "lines" on them absolutely need to be replaced. A slight discolorization is normal and not in itself reason for rejection. Many reputable techs will replace them all anyway, "just in case". Your choice.

As for looseness, if they are in good condition, as just stated, there will be some ever-so-slight looseness. A roller bearing cannot run "tight". To do so will destroy it.
