I have a 1961 Lark 40 hp. I was wondering how to tell if it is overheating, also how much water should be coming out the hole in the rear at idle. Thanks in advance.

You should briefly be able to hold your hand on the cylinder head. The relief hole will exhaust water as the thermostat opens.

There should be some water coming out the exhaust relief hole any time the motor is running. However, the amount of water coming out varies according to whether or not the thermostat is open. And the thermostat constantly opens and closes as necessary to maintain the proper temperature over the full range of operating conditions, so it is not a matter of waiting X number of minutes for it to open.
