Last year, I'm pulling up to the gas dock. I have the 7 year old in the boat /w me. I jump out of the boat onto the dock, and tell him to throw me the rope (you know, the one tied around the cleat?)

He throws me the OTHER rope .. you know .. the one not tied to anything. So there's the boat, and 7 year old, floating away from the gas dock.

In the water I go, dry clothes and all. Woohoo!

He can't figure out the ladder (it's a hook on the side) so I get to climb up the (not running) outboard.

Should try that when the air temp is 45F. The docking rope was ripped from my dads hands once as it got caught on one of the trailer guide posts. It landed in "no mans land" where we couldnt grab it from either dock. Fairly stiff wind blowing out, so natrualy by the time someone stripped down to the bare essentials to jump in, the boat was 30ft from the dock.................with no one in it.
