I have an Evinrude model 4389 - 00555. I know it is 9.7 hp 4 cyl.. Any ideas on where if any parts are available. All 4 plugs have spark to them. I know I can buy a manual online just wondering about any parts, tune-up, seals etc. The motor was free. Thanks

Sweet. An old Light Four. 1946 - 49 This was basically the "big brother" to the Zephyr. If you have spark on all four cylinders, that's a plus. It won't take much to get it going again. The best thing I would suggest is clean it all up good and relube the moving parts and I bet it will come back to life.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions. Another question is what is the best way to clean the inside of these old aluminum gas tanks ( i think it's aluminum) I plan on using carb cleaner on the carb itself not sure about the tank. Thanks

Re: Late 40's Evinrude

I know they make fuel tank cleaners. A guy showed me some the other day at West Marine. It's a sort of solvent that cleans the tank but is apparently safe in the case some gets into the fuel and gets run into the motor. It actually can help clean the fuel system in the motor. I'd check the label closely to make sure it's safe on such an older motor and it should tell you whether it's safe on a metal tank. Seems to me it would be if it's safe on the motor itself... :)

I would use the Chem-Dip Carburetor cleaner and just fill the tank up with it. After a couple days, then just open the cap and dump it out back into the can.

Well other than the carb jet adjustments leaking gas aroound them the old motor seems to have some life left. Grease in bottom end thick but no evidence of water. Poured some gas in carb and the old girl fired right off. If I can get the carb to stop leaking I think I can take it for a spin. Time to go on a parts search. Which jet on the carb is which?

I would just tighten the packing nuts. That should do it.

Picked up a 76' Johnson 15 today, might just put the old motor on ebay and see if I can get alittle money towards the new purchase. Thanks for the advice.
