I took the boat to water to give a pre-season test run. It started first turn, idled fine, and seemed to shift okay(electric shift). I let it warm up a bit then slowly throttled up. We ran at full throttle for a bit and then bang, shifted itself into reverse and popped the motor out of the water. Now it will only shift into reverse and neutral, not forward. There is still power at the switch, and i tried to hard wire it but to no avail.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

we need model #, because there are different types of electric shifts.

The 80hp was made in 1966 and 1967. Electric shift with spring clutches.

You obviously have an electrical problem. A reckless guess is the cable going down to the lower unit has disintegrated and shorted out. But it could also be the cable going forward to the controls or shift switch. Be careful with hot wiring that thing. If you energize both forward and reverse at the same time it will bust something e$pen$ive. Might have already happened.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will have to take a better look at the electrical. I was very carefull when i hardwired it making sure not to connect forward and reverse.
