Late model 50hp knock??

Hi! It's MY turn to ask advice.

New arrival to the Clamshack(tm) is a very late model 50hp triple ser# OT218646. It has a slight to moderate knock in the what sounds like #1. Owner wants it found and eliminated, and a new powerhead is $4500 so I gotta go in and find it the old fashioned way.

Any history with these little triples as to a known issue? What ought I be looking for (other than the obvious).

Clams I had 1 that had carbon build up make it knock (that would be to easy) and a couple that were over reved on startup with damaged pistons-Bob

Does it seem louder at idle and mostly dissappear when at higher rpms? Could be a scuffed piston, causing piston slap. seen that more than once.

Thanks for the replys... I'm gonna do it today so I'll post back. Been real busy here, plus the slower BBS with my dial-up makes for less visiting.
