I hope this doesn't get to heated!

Which is better, Latex house paint of polyurethane?

I know the latex is cheaper, and feel like it may flex a little more to help keep those hairline spidercracks from reappearing and my cover up my crappo epoxy repairs. I'm worried about it not being hard enough though. I guess you can't have really hard and still be flexible, lol.

I'm also wondering how well latex would do on the bottom side. I have this vision of it coming off in one big sheet when I'm planing out going 60.

sorry if this is to strong but............If you use latex house paint to paint your boat....your crazy. Use marine paint please. You ask why? For every reason you are thinking right now. You will always be more satisfied with marine paint. I just finished the resto of my cruiser's deck. The previous owner had painted a big portion of it with latex paint. Lucky for me it was fairly easy to remove as latex will not adhere to fiberglass. Please for your own good.....use marine finishes!

Polyurethane is fine for above waterline, 2 part urethanes or automotive is better for underwater use. None of them can be used below waterline on a boat that stays in the water, except for true bottom paint. The only time latex should be on a boat is when you happen to set the can on the boat while clearing space for it on a nearby shelf. Good luck....

Re: Latex vs Polyurethane

I read some of the article you linked in your first post. Based on what I read I think the writer is referring to wooden boats. This may make some difference in the use of latex on the exterior. Regardless, I think the only boat I would use latex on is sitting on my fireplace mantel. Go with marine stuff. the money is worth it.
Remember me mentioning the latex on my boat's deck? I have no idea how long it had been on there, but it looked awful. I assume not too long as some small (very small) portions of it were actually still sticking to the deck. The vast majority of it however was either badly stained, peeling or missing altogether.
