I saw you guys talking about this program. I downloaded it, and ran it. I am not sure I am using it correctly though. Will it quarentine what needs to be quarentined by itself, or do I have to do it?

Re: Lavasoft Adaware

Ad-Aware is an excellent program. But you really should also run the latest SpywareBlaster from Javacoolsoftware.com since Ad-Aware is a removal tool and Spywareblaster is a prevention tool. Together you have good coverage. OR, just use Spybot S&D alone for both. AdAware tends to do the job a little easier in the most stubborn cases, but all three are excellent (and free!) tools well proven to do the job.
I'll have to go look at one of the machines with AdAware on there before I can answer the original question. Whatever you use keep it updated regularly and run it fairly often, at least every week or two in my opinion. Depends on how much you are online.

AdAware:
click start.
select "smart system scan", click next.
When its done, click next.
Right click on any of the files it found and click on "select all objects."
Click next.
Click "OK".

Re: Lavasoft Adaware

I have run AdAware 90 times in the last 7 months, and it has found over 3200 pieces of spyware.

I believe the companies that send this stuff should be treated as hackers, and prosecuted.

Read the help or tutorial file. It explains what to delete & what can be left.

AMEN Roscoe!!!! Lets get a long rope and a tall tree.....

Slowly I'm getting anti-spyware software installed on all the computers here at school. Some of the teachers wouldn't believe me and kept downloading screen savers and cute smiley face toolbars. I have cumulatively spent at least a couple WEEKS this year undoing the damage. Some of these spyware not only multiply the pop-ups and funnel more spam back, they also take over other computer processes and alter the operating system and browser. Proving which one did it is the hard part, That IS prosecuteable (hacking) but very difficult to nail down. This stuff is very real!!!

How about a class action lawsuit with a class action pool of defendants? :)

Re: Lavasoft Adaware

Well, did it all yesterday, and all seemed fine........till I went to my home page. It wants me to sign in (excite), and I joined so long long ago, I no longer have the e-mail address I signed in with! To make matters worse, I don't know the user name I used!!!!! (I did it when I first got computer years ago) I had it set up watching my stocks, along with all kinds of other "personalized" things. I could run go back, but then I would be back to square 1 with the spyware! Now I gotta join again, and remake my home page. :(

BiXLL,
Go to the quarentine section of Adaware,+ Find the excite "cookie" that was removed,+ Restore it.........

Then once you're back into your home page, Find the Info you've lost,+ Write it down........

BiXLL - I keep an inexpensive note book on top of my monitor. I write down the login name, password, ULR and date of everything I sign up for. I also keep notes on technical computer stuff used less often so I can refer back to them when needed.

Adaware is great stuff! I run CleanUp first to remove all cookies, temp internet files, history files, etc. Usually reclaims about .9gigabyte of HD space. Cuts down on Adaware’s file scanning time.

I have about 6 or 7 forums I frequent. The adaware did not affect my auto login on any of them, but if I delete cookies, I will have to log in to everything everytime!

Bondo, thanks for the tip! Any idea why its just my excite cookie that was removed?

You will just have to sign in again one time and another cookie will be installed on your computer if you have it allowed.

Keep in mind, that the free version of Ad-aware will allow you to remove unwanted cookies according to the reference-file in the program. It is, as with antivirus software, crucial to keep this updated.

The licensed version also has Ad-watch so you can prevent any of these intruders from getting at all, instead of getting rid of them when you occasionally run the program.
