Hey guys,

all the wood is cut and I am trimming back the sides of the hatches before I waterproof everything. Was wondering how much of a gap I should have on each side of the ply wood hatch to account for the carpet that will be wrapped over it. I have been cutting and checking with some scraps and it seems like I need a good 3/8 on each side? Plus I am worried about swelling or shrinking with heat. Any experience as always is greatly appreciated!!

Well the proof is in the pudding .. you did your homework and it seems like you need your 3/8 gap on each side for the wrap.

I dont think your ply is going to expand on the end grain .. so I think whatever measurements you take will be a tight fit or a loose fit .. or a perfect fit.

There really is no way of telling for the future of fits :D ..

I have done both loose and hard fits. But sometimes the user does not tell me the use or maintenance of the carpet/floor.

I normally go loose.

YD.
