Does anyone know how to determine the size of an electric motor needed for a particular weight of boat. Is there a rule of thumb or formula? Have 21' bassboat, weighs aprox.2800 lbs without gear, fuel, and buddies.

might want to try the boat forum. I'd say put as many lbs. of thrust on as you can afford to buy.

That what I was thinking, you can never be overpowered. I was just wondering if there's some kind of formula for a minimum.

I read somewhere recently that it's 70 lbs of boat per lb of thrust. 3500lb boat(boat, motor, gear and people) / 70= 50lb thrust electric motor.
Good luck

That sounds a bit on the low side but thanks for the input. I guess it would make sense if you consider that to be a minimum of the required thrust. That sounds good. Thanks again

I'm close to the formula with my motor.

1,200 - 1,500 lbs. boat/motor/gear and a Minn Kota 28 lb thrust Autopilot.

It does fine for me, even in the wind.
