Does anyone know how to determine the size of an electric motor needed for a particular weight of boat. Is there a rule of thumb or formula? Have 21' bassboat, weighs aprox.2800 lbs without gear, fuel, and buddies.
I read somewhere recently that it's 70 lbs of boat per lb of thrust. 3500lb boat(boat, motor, gear and people) / 70= 50lb thrust electric motor.
Good luck
That sounds a bit on the low side but thanks for the input. I guess it would make sense if you consider that to be a minimum of the required thrust. That sounds good. Thanks again
I'm close to the formula with my motor.

1,200 - 1,500 lbs. boat/motor/gear and a Minn Kota 28 lb thrust Autopilot.

It does fine for me, even in the wind.
