Leak at seam of Mercruiser drive

When running the motor on land, with the muffs on, there is a leak around the seam between the upper and lower. It is a rebuilt "M" series Mercruiser, I think. I looked at www.mercstuff.com for an exploded view of the drive. There doesn't appear to be a seal or gasket betweent the upper and lower. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Should I be concerned? The boat runs well and doesn't overheat. Some information would be really appreciated. Also, when I shift slowly, there is a grinding noise, but when I do a fast shift, there isn't any problem. Is this ok? I am used to an OMC 800 series drive, but relaced it at the end of last season with this rebuilt Mercruiser. I was told that if I did the slow shift I could expect the grinding noise? Is this true? Thanks again!

Do not shift slowly just even stroke to the fow or rev position when running on muffs water will fill the exaust housing and run out where i think you are thinking. It is not oil right? if this is all you have no problems. A.D.

Re: Leak at seam of Mercruiser drive

Thanks for the reply. The quick, smooth shift thing does work. Doesn't grind when I do that. It's alot different from the OMC system that I had in the boat. It's not nearly as smooth running. The water is leaking around the seam that the lower makes with the upper, when they are put together. I don't think that there is a gasket or seal there, just metal to metal. The mechanic that did the work said that it is not something to worry about, but with a one season warranty, I'd rather worry now than next season.
