Leak Down Test

Would someone please explain what this is and why is it used on an old mercury engine. Thanks, Mike

IT is a test of cylinder condition.------They apply air at pressure and monitor how much air leaks by pistons and rings.----There is no head gasket on an inline motor.----There is a head gasket on V models.-----No valves either.-----Some have said that this test can not be done on 2 strokes.----But I know good mechanics that do this test all the time.

Thanks for that, racerone. I asked a marine mechanic to let me know if my motor was worth spending a lot of money on. One of the tests was a "leak down". I had it to the point of giving up on it so I let him work on it and it cost me $120 to get it adjusted so it ran "Fine". I am losing confidence in my ability to keep it up to form. May have him work on it from now on.

tha fact that he knows how and what a "basic leak down" test is puts him up there with tha good mechanics.... jmo.
