Leaking carbs

1984 Force 85 with walbro we9 carbs. Did my first start up today (off a remote tank) and at least it puffed a few times then back fired and was leaking out the throat of the carbs all 3. Removed carbs and was going to rebuild but they are almost perfectly clean inside. Any advice? Engine was almost completely down except for a smal 2x4 on the ground.

Would you say that the carbs keeps leaking after the fuel bulb was primed firm ?

The 85 used the brass floats, they never sucessfully made a foam replacement that would work.

Get a can of carb cleaner spray.
Each carb take apart and spray into all the tiny passages and holes.
Test the floats and see if they have gas in them?
Make sure the high speed jets are open.
Check the needle/seat and spray them too.
I usually wash the carb in Dawn soap after the spray with the cleaner.
Compressed air, dry the parts as good as you can.
After dry reassemble.
Top screw is the air/fuel mix at idle.
The factory says set it at 1 turn out and let it stay there.
Most time that works, other times no.
You might have to set it after it starts??

Since it backfired: one stutter, backfire, cough etc. can blow the port cover gaskets?
Can of starting fluid. Start motor and then spray SF around the intake side of the motor.
That includes the base of the carbs, under the coils and power pack and the fuel pump.
If the spray makes any difference? then it is probably sucking air someplace.

Thank you. The needle seat on these uses what looks like a viton seal that is microscopic and held in with a microscopic cir clip.

Ok so after a much closer examination. there is a part "Nozzle spring" that i think holds the "Nozzle" in a fixed position. It is not in any of the 3 carbs? I pulled the nozzle out and it just sits in there by gravity and friction. as its a NLA part is this somehow a part that is not necessary?

So what im asking is has anyone recently taken apart a mid 80's carb and had a spring in the bottom of the bowl over the bolt that holds it on and going up into the emulsion tube.

IF...you got what I'm thinking; you should have only one carb. like that, that tube would lead to the "fuel en richer" solenoid.
that is not mid 80's but early 90's and on

can you not post a pic.?

exactly the same carbs. Im just going off the diagrams for 1985 85 HP force. About half thru you can see the spring on the table behind the carb cleaner

Your way off on this one!!

That enricher is for the 91+ without the mechanical choke.

The spring?? There's a 50/50 chance that your carb will have the spring/?
Had a pair of 88/85s on a 21
The port motor had the springs, the stbd. motor didn't have them.
There was a gap of 200 in the serial #s
The early didn't have the newer had the springs???

If it's in there?? Put it back.

I thought I was bang-on?!? you're saying the same thing; That enricher is for the 91+ without the mechanical choke.

I guess you missed the part where I said; IF...you got what I'm thinking:tea:

Lol glad i could make the masters "think" a little on this one. If you look at 85 ish parts diagram all show it. Thx for the info ! Im not an engineer but they are gone, not available and i really dont see the purpose for it.

Like I said you have a 50/50 chance of the springs being there??
The carbs could have been changed sometime along the way??

I didn't see the purpose but if they were in there? They go back.

IF???
