leaking Engine

Hi, Have 40 hpw Johnson Seahorse, model RDSL-26R. Any one know the year. Also, is leaking black oil from pencil-lead size aperture , r/h side of lower unit, about three inches above the propelor. Appreciate any advice as this is the first venture into boating for a 76 year old retiree. <br /> Rebpaul in Mashpee

Rebpaul,<br /><br />The substance you see is PROBABLY residue exhaust.<br /><br />Have you serviced the lower unit lately.
