Hey guys I have some fuel/oil coming out from the under side of my outboard. I know unburned oil comes out of the exhaust but is this normal? Here are some pics. johnson j115tlcte

Without removing the cowling and looking closer, it looks like you might have a defective powerhead base gasket allowing unburnt fuel mixture to escape before it goes into the exhaust housing.

I agree on the possible power head gast to the exhaust leg or a fuel leak based on that side of the motor.

The powerhead gasket leak is technically not a fatal problem. However-as you run the engine, the exhaust gas that leaks into the cowling will get recirculated back into the carbs when it's running. From that standpoint, it's best to get it fixed sooner, rather than later.

So I need a powerhead gasket? Is that pretty simple to replace? Im getting ready to rebuild my carbs so that could be something I can do while I got it apart.

Have you got a manual (factory), you are going to have to remove the powerhead. It's not a quick job, but the manual will leed you through it.

It's about a 3 hour job. You'll need some type of lifting device for the powerhead. You are lucky, there is a lifting eye bolted to the top of the engine. Be particular about the gasket you purchase. There are a couple of powerhead gaskets which will fit on your engine. I've seen ones which are just paper. They are no good. You need one that has an aluminum look to it. It is a combination of a pc of aluminum and paper layered together. It's the only one that will last.

Thanks. I might have to take it somewhere to get it done. That sounds like alot more than I can handle since I dont have any kind of lift.

You could rent or even buy a chain fall for short money.
All you would need at that point is a place to secure the chain fall from. If you have a garage with exposed rafters, not a problem. If you have a friendly tree with a low stout branch, no problem. If you have some dimensional lumber kicking around, you could even put together a mini gantry crane in short order that would work as well.
