Hello, I finished everything and the flush prop wash is clean but, when I tilt my motor up, it drips fuel from the choke housing area.. this is model serial number 6318559.. I purchased back in 1983..have change all the parts I thought needed but not sure why it drips mix fuel when I tilt it up on the sawhorse! the prop wash on idle (neutral) looks pretty good. Can anyone help me ? there is no manual available and parts are either discontinued or hard to find online. The motor was garage stored for decades and hardly used before that.. albeit, old but in goodt running condition.

Did you take the cowling off and tilt it up to see where it is coming from

Not yet but I'm going to , was looking at the parts list diagram.. I am hoping it is a minor problem.. perhaps where the fuel line connects,, I will post here after I take off the cowling to pinpoint the leak maybe do it this weekend. thanks for the reply.

Re: leaking fuel on tilt up

Okay, I popped off the cowling and found the leak.. it is located on the carburetor and it appears to be an open port drain for overflow? Think it is just the way it was designed because, if the shut off fuel valve is closed , it stops.. open the fuel shut off and it pisses out ths stem port on the lower side on the carburetor. Not sure if this is a late design flaw or maybe the idle screws need to be reset but at least I know where it leaks. Is this normal overflow leakage or trouble service issue? The engine starts no problem and idles nice.. I do however notice a bit of ash residue and the water stays milk cloudy too after a good 15 minute flush in a 5 gal. bucket. My 2hp yahama burns much cleaner and water in bucket appears crystal clear after same flush time. Just not sure if I'll be waisting more money trying new replacement parts for the 3.5 mercury. I'm thinking now maybe the older models just run dirtier and perhaps why Mercury discontinued many of the parts for this 1983 model? tia, john
