Why is my 1985 90 HP Johnny leak fuel from cowling when I fully tilt the motor? I can't seem to find the source.

I rebuilt carbs last year with new floats...that doesn't mean it might need it again but I would be surprised.

I do have the same problem on my 90hp, after I stop the engine and trim it up to put boat on the trailer, gas leak from the carbs air cover.
I think it's from the gas left over in the carbs, I don't know if it's normal or not.

If it's just a bit, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's alot, then there might be cause for concern...Some leak a little, some don't....Mercs were notorious for this...

Re: Leaking Fuel When Tilted

It is not unusual to have a small amount of gas exit the carbs when tilted, esp on the older engines. Your airbox should have a good/new gasket on it, and it will trap the excess gas in the bottom of the airbox-instead of it leaking into the lower cowling. The next time you tilt the engine down, the gas will run out the airbox drain hole in the bottom, and be sucked into the #4 cylinder for combustion. (Be sure your airbox hose is connected to the crankcase under the bottom carb.)
